Clinical Management of Acid-base and Electrolyte Imbalances in Neonatal Calf Diarrhea

Neonatal diarrhea in calves can result in potentially serious metabolic derangements including profound acidemia due to metabolic acidosis, hyper-D-lactatemia, hyper-L-lactatemia, hypoglycemia, hemoconcentration, and azotemia. Electrolyte imbalances such as hyperkalemia are also common in affected calves and are closely linked to derangements of acid-base status. The presentation will give an update on clinical signs and the management of acid-base and associated electrolyte imbalances in neonatal calf diarrhea.
