Newly Identified Inherited Neuromuscular Diseases in Foals

This case discussion is aimed at describing two newly identified inherited neuromuscular diseases in foals. First, cases of equine familial isolated hypoparathyroidism (EFIH), leading to a fatal hypocalcemia in Thoroughbred foals will be presented through case descriptions and videos. The genetic etiology for EFIH was uncovered and genetic testing will be discussed. Additionally, unpublished allele frequencies of EFIH in the Thoroughbred breed will be presented. Next, cases of equine juvenile degenerative axonopathy (EJDA) in Quarter Horse foals will be presented through case descriptions and videos. An update on the genetics underlying EJDA will be presented.
