Anemia of Chronic Kidney Disease, Pathogenesis and Potentials for Gene Therapy

Anemia of chronic kidney disease is a complex phenomenon that can severely increase morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of anemia of CKD is complex, involving more than just erythropoietin and iron. In addition, there are new treatments on the horizon. The purpose of this presentation would be to discuss the complex pathogenicity as well as outline a new therapeutic paradigm. Data from a recently completed trial of a adeno-associated virus vectored feline erythropoietin gene therapy in cats would also be discussed.
