Proceedings/Handout

New findings on Equid herpesvirus-1 latency will be presented, including alternative locations, in situ hybridization results and transcriptome analysis. Similarities to human Varicella-Zoster virus or Bovine herpesvirus-1 will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will have a different view of EHV-1 chronic persistent infection and latency in the horse. Besides the respiratory tract associated lymphoid tissue and the trigeminal ganglion of the recently with EHV-1 infected horse, there could be alternative locations of the neural parenchyma and lymphatic tissues.
Upon completion, participants will understand the differences between RNA profiles or transcriptional activity of latent versus lytic EHV-1.
Upon completion, participants will understand that eradication of EHV-1 might be possible through repressing its reactivation from latent locations.
