Studies in purpose-bred dogs have demonstrated the advantages of Insulin glargine U300 (Toujeo) including long duration of action and minimal within- and between-day variation. Here we present data on the use of Toujeo in client owned dogs with naturally occurring diabetes mellitus. We will briefly review the pharmacology of Insulin glargine U300 and the concept of basal and bolus insulin requirement. Then, we will present our cumulative experience with over 60 cases treated with Toujeo, including diabetic dogs with concurrent diseases. We will also discuss our experience with combination therapy of Toujeo with other insulin formulations and describe a simple protocol for initiation of therapy, dose escalation, and stabilization with once or twice daily injection of Toujeo with or without additional, shorter acting formulations.
