1.8 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year with 5-year survival rates greater than 60%. 18 million cancer survivors are predicted by the year 2025. As survivorship grows, more rehabilitation providers will be treating this unique and medically complex population. Cancer and oncological treatments may impact the survivors’ physical, cognitive, and psychological functioning. Rehabilitation providers are essential in mitigation of deficits to assist the survivor to return to optimal performance to daily living. However, it is important that providers are knowledgeable about the cancer diagnosis, oncological treatments, and common side effects to safely execute rehabilitation interventions.

Learning Objectives:

Identify safety considerations for rehabilitation interventions throughout the continuum of cancer care.
Discuss the implications of blood values and oncological treatments on the cancer survivor in oncology rehabilitation.
List common sites of metastatic disease in the most common cancer diagnoses.
Learn how to assess cancer related cognitive impairment (CRCI).
Discuss special considerations related to rehabilitation treatment interventions in the cancer survivor.
