Participation is a highly prioritized outcome to people with a broad range of disabilities. However, rehabilitation science has struggled to conceptualize and measure participation in a way that is precise, quantifiable, and reflective of stakeholder priorities and values. In this symposium, we will review new research examining the validity and psychometric properties of the Community Participation Indicators and the Activity Card Sort-3. We will discuss the implications of this work for research and practice and identify ways that these tools can provide a more precise, consumer-driven approach to measurement of participation. Finally, we will discuss ongoing needs and future efforts to continue to improve measurement of participation and related constructs.
