Individualized Pressure Injury Prevention: Harnessing the Power of Pressure Map Data Across Multiple Contexts

Managing sitting-related pressure is a lifelong challenge for wheelchair users with spinal cord injury and remains a clinical challenge for rehabilitation experts working with them. While evidence-based advances guide equipment selection, patient education, and monitoring of weight shifts, clinicians still lack an objective measure of how seat interface pressure is managed during weight shifts and throughout daily routines. This symposium aims to share our multi-site, multi-disciplinary research exploring the use of continuous day-long seat interface pressure measurement on wheelchair seats. A user-based iterative approach has guided the design and development of a pressure map-based software platform for wheelchair users and a clinical dashboard that provides contextual details about pressure management. We will discuss how this context-rich data can inform individualized care around pressure injury prevention.
