Sara is currently the Corporate Program Development Director for Rehabilitation & Therapy Services for Shriners Hospitals for Children – International Headquarters. Sara has been with the Shriners Hospital system for over 33 years and served in a variety of capacities including as the Assistant Director of Family Services, the Director of Care Coordination and most recently as the Director of Business Development, Marketing & Communications. In addition to these roles, Sara served as the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) team leader for more than 20 years and the Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Service at the Chicago Hospital. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work from Mundelein College of Loyola University and her master’s degree from the University of Illinois. She has been on the adjunct faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago teaching Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Practice I & Practice with Children. Sara is a frequent guest lecturer and well published in the field of pediatric spinal cord injury. She currently serves on the board of directors for BACKBONES and on the medical and scientific advisory board for United Spinal Association. She has served on the Illinois Governor’s Council for Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, the board of directors for the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Illinois, as the chair of the prevention committee for the American Spinal Injury Association and on the section board of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals where she is a past vice-president. Sara was the recipient of that organization’s Clinical Performance Award in 2007 and in 2013 was honored as the organization’s Essie Morgan Distinguished Lecturer. Sara was also named Social Worker of the Year for the State of Illinois in 2012.
