Dr. Sally Ann Holmes is an Associate Professor in the H. Ben Taub Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. A physiatrist who specializes in the care of people with spinal cord injury, she has provided care at the Michael E. DeBakey VAMC in Houston, Texas, for nearly 30 years. As the Care Line Executive for the Spinal Cord Injury Center at the VAMC in Houston, Texas, she oversees the care for over 600 Veterans with SCI that are served by the South-Central VA Healthcare Network (VISN-16). She has research experience related to SCI in the areas of pressure ulcers, psychological adjustment, and supported employment. She has experience and expertise in medical aspects of SCI as it pertains to adjustment outcomes. In the current DOD-funded project entitled, Loneliness and Its Relation to Health in People with Spinal Cord Injury, she serves as a consultant/co-investigator. The goal of this project is to enhance our understanding of loneliness and its relation to physical and psychological health among men and women with SCI. As part of this study, exposure to interpersonal violence is also explored as a potential correlate of loneliness and health. We anticipate that the improved understanding of the short- and long-term factors associated with loneliness will not only help health care providers better identify those at greatest risk of loneliness but will also inform the development of interventions to address this challenging issue.
