Helena Fordell, MD PhD Neurologist, Senior Consultant, Clinical Lead of Stroke Medicin, Umeå University Hospital (2001-2020). Dr H Fordell a researcher and involved in translational research at Clinical Neurosciences, Neurology, Umeå University, Region Västerbotten, Sweden, Medical Advisor for Brain Stimulation a partly University owned company to protect IP rights. Her focus for 20 years has been the work to bridge knowledge about spatial attention, spatial neglect and associated functional impairments after stroke, to clinical practice from a multiprofessional perspective, with the best for the stroke patients in focus at every timepoint. She wants to deepen and spread the understanding of neuronal mechanism for attention related to diagnostic, assessment and individualized treatment. From collaboration in the international collaboration group I-SAND, reach out to experts in the field to find consensus about definition, and recommendations to clinicians. To support physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech therapists and ophthalmologists to use the best method to identify, diagnose and give effective individualized treatments. To support the substantial part of the population having impaired function of attention after stroke in the acute phase, in the rehabilitation phase and in late phase, previously called chronic phase after a stroke. She is actively involved in international groups to promote the practice of spatial neglect assessment and to facilitate clinical recommendations. For example, she is one of the founding members of the International Group for Spatial Attention and related Disorders (I-SAND), and the first article from the group was based on a multi-disciplinary, multi-national survey study focused on spatial neglect evaluation. She has also been deeply involved in the European Association of Neurology, which will publish a clinical guideline for screening acute stroke patients for spatial neglect. Her passion is to find innovative ways to use digital techniques in an innovative way to facilitate the diagnosis, assessment and treatment for spatial neglect. To use the latest technology to create more effective and reliable assessments and treatments using mixed reality (MR) technology.
