Health System Specialist
Department of Veterans Affairs
Reno, Nevada, United States
Barry Peterson (MSE, MBA) is a Health System Specialist for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), at the medical center in Reno, Nevada. His role is to enhance employee engagement. Recently he has been he has been working to leverage XR to improve veteran care and employee training.
After a long hiatus, his current work provides Barry with a chance to reconnect with his VR roots. In 1995, he joined the Human Interface Technology Laboratory, at the University of Washington. Upon graduation, Barry accepted a position as a research associate at the Naval Postgraduate School, where his research continued, to determine if practice in virtual environments could enhance military navigation performance. As this research plan was forming, the events of 9/11 called Barry to the non-VR exploration of nonviolence and yoga as parallel paths to peace. He designed and taught courses on the Vietnam War, genocide, and peace studies at the University of Nevada. In 2016 he sought government service again, this time with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Prior to his graduate studies, Barry was an industrial engineer and U.S. Army officer. His experiences as a soldier are the foundation for his interest in enhancing morale and tactical decision-making. Today, his interests continue to be the real-world application of XR to enhance employee engagement, leadership, and morale in high-stakes workplaces. Barry continues to teach yoga and champion Whole Health.
