Dr. Maria Swartz is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatrics at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Swartz earned her PhD in behavioral sciences in 2014 from the University of Texas School of public health, where she earlier earned a master’s degree in public health with a focus in health promotion/health in 2007. She is also a licensed registered dietitian since 2005. Dr. Swartz’s research focuses on the intersection of physical activity and diet on physical and cognitive functions in children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer. She develops and implements digital health and video game-based interventions to promote physical activity and weight management. Furthermore, she uses digital health-based strategies to: a) address functional assessment challenges, b) aid functional capacity assessments by pairing wearable sensors with machine learning algorithms, and c) promote active living by using a group-based exergame approach. The ultimate goal of her research is to improve health outcomes for cancer patients and survivors at risk of functional disability.
