Elliot J. Roth, MD is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor and Chairman of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Physician on the Brain Innovation Center of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago), and Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was former Senior Vice President and Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab). Dr. Roth is the Project Director of the “Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) on Interventions to Promote Community Living for Persons with Disabilities”, and former Project Director of the “Stroke RRTC”, “Midwest Regional Traumatic Brain Injury Model System”, and RRTC on Health and Function for People with Physical Disabilities",, funded by the US National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. He also leads several other research projects supported by Federal agencies and private foundations, primarily focused on neurorehabilitation. Dr. Roth has published more than 150 papers in medical rehabilitation, has one patent, and has led teaching sessions with rehabilitation trainees for more than 30 years. He maintains an active medical practice, specializing in the care and treatment of patients with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other neurological disorders. A passionate supporter of the team approach to care and research, Dr. Roth emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration in his clinical and academic activities. He is widely recognized as a leading expert in interdisciplinary neurorehabilitation and has received many awards from national organizations, including the Edward R Lowman Award for Interdisciplinary Team Work from ACRM, National Aphasia Association's Aphasia Advocacy Award, and the American Academy of PM&R's Distinguished Clinician Award . He has taught and mentored more than 500 medical trainees, graduate students, and post-doctoral research fellows, and serves on several non-profit organizations Boards of Directors.
