Health Science Specialist
Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital
Hines, Illinois, United States
Andrea A. Billups, LSW completed her Master degree in Social Work at The University of Alabama in 2014. With a concentration in children, adolescents and their families, Andrea focused her efforts, initially, on substance abuse treatment and recovery at Bradford Health Services in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. While at Bradford, Andrea lead an Adolescent Substance Abuse Outreach team (providing education and community resources for at risk youth) and developed an interactive curriculum for family support group interventions. Andrea also served as coordinator of services for female at risk adolescents at the Girls Intensive Education & Treatment Facility during this time (2012-2014). Andrea transitioned to Hines VA (2014-2016), where she served in a supportive role for the Research and Development Service Line. However, a strong interest in behavior modification in recovery lead Andrea to CTF Illinois (2016-2017). During her stay with this organization, she served as part of an interdisciplinary team empowering individuals with developmental and mental health challenges to increase overall quality of life, acquire gainful employment and self-advocate. In the social work field, Andrea has served, most notably as court advocate for family reunification at T.A.S.C., Chicago (2017). Andrea returned, once again, to Edward Hines Jr., VA Hospital in late 2017 as a Health Science Specialist, on Dr. Amy Herrold's clinical neuroscience research team. As a U.S. Army veteran herself, Andrea is proud to provide clinical and administrative support for Dr. Herrold’s research on co-occurring mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), alcohol use disorder (AUD) and mental health disorders and continues to serve veterans in her current role as Patient Advocate.
