Professor and Chair
Harvard Medical School, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Charlestown, Massachusetts, United States
I am a physiatrist who specializes in the assessment and recovery of those with traumatic brain injury (TBI) (with a specific focus on concussion and mild TBI). I spend most of my time performing in a diverse set of activities including administrative duties, clinical work, research and teaching. Since my appointment as Professor and Chair at Harvard Medical School and Senior Vice President at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, I have endeavored to provide excellent clinical care, teaching, and administrative leadership while also conducting clinical research in TBI, SCI and rehabilitation outcomes. Our department has grown significantly both academically and clinically. Through my lecturing at the regional and national level, my scholarly writing of peer-reviewed original research and book chapters in authoritative text books, my clinical research (federally- and foundation-supported research projects), and my involvement in advocacy organizations and other professional societies, I have sought to improve the lives of persons with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and other catastrophic illness.
In addition to my clinical and research activities, I have an extensive history of mentoring trainees. I supervise TBI fellows (PGY-5) and PGY-3 and -4 Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residents three times a week for nine months of the year. I have mentored more than 60 trainees on long-term research projects in the fields of TBI, SCI and rehabilitation outcomes that have resulted in numerous conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications and awards. This work is enhanced by my role as Co PI on a T32 focused on Neurorecovery and Neurotechnology (5T32NS100663-04) led by Dr. Jonathan Rosand at Massachusetts General Hospital. Several of my former fellows hold academic leadership positions, some being chairpersons with long histories of Federal Research funding. I have been the primary mentor of our department and helped to develop the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Research Day in recognition of the best resident research projects in the department. In addition, I supervise 3-5 medical students per year on my PM&R clerkship rehabilitation rotations.
