Implementing Communication Partner Training for PTs and OTs: Examining Clinician Practice and Patient Care Impact

In an interdisciplinary care model, effective communication from all disciplines is critical to maximize a patient’s outcomes. Effective communication is integral to understanding patients’ healthcare needs, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. The ADA and The Joint Commission specify that healthcare professionals (HCP) must provide discussion regarding health-related topics and interventions involving the patient, including those with communication difficulties, in an equal and complete manner. Currently, many patients experience communication barriers that prevent access to the full benefit of received clinical interventions. Some of these barriers may arise due to lack of communication strategy knowledge and skill on the part of HCP. Communication Partner Training, an evidence-based communication education method, has shown promising initial results when implemented with HCP. This presentation describes development, implementation, and initial outcomes of a tailored CPT for outpatient Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists. Clinician and patient experiences pre- and post-training will be discussed.
