Ableism as a Social Determinant of Health Disparities Social determinants of health and health disparities have received increased attention in recent years given preventable differences in health outcomes among marginalized communities. Disability is too often conceptualized as a health outcome to be avoided rather than a distinct sociopolitical group. Yet, disability is a diversity variable resulting in numerous health disparities. Although health status and disability can overlap, when used synonymously undermine efforts at health promotion and disease prevention for disabled people. Social determinants directly influence the health status of disabled people, increasing morbidity and mortality rates. Most problematic of these social factors are the harmful attitudes perpetuated by healthcare providers toward patients with disabilities that contribute toward adverse health outcomes for people with disabilities. Ableism is prevalent in rehabilitation settings and subverts culturally competent healthcare. This symposium will emphasize anti-ableist practices to promote disability justice in healthcare.
