While advances in acute medical care have improved survival rates after moderate/severe pediatric brain injuries, debilitating cognitive impairments often persist. While inpatient rehabilitation is associated with improved functional outcomes after TBI, there is tremendous potential for further improvement of cognitive functions. Given the heterogeneous nature of brain injuries and relatively small sample sizes in existing research, multisite studies are imperative for development of interventions aimed at improving cognitive recovery. We will present four studies that have resulted from the creation of a multi-center consortium, the Pediatric Brain Injury Consortium. These studies focused on children with TBI undergoing inpatient rehabilitation and include a) characterization of demographics and clinical course, along with predictors of cognitive outcome and b). current dosing practices for amantadine and methyphenidate. Discussion will include work towards designing clinical trials for acute inpatient rehabilitation, including for delineating protocols for assessing standardized outcomes.
