Measurement may be the most ubiquitous and consequential action that rehabilitation clinicians and researchers undertake on a frequent basis. Validity, which is essential to measurement, may be the most critical yet under-appreciated component of measurement. Rehabilitation clinicians, researchers, and educators make measurement decisions daily but may not appreciate implications of the adequacy and appropriateness of instruments in the contexts of use and subsequent clinical interpretation of resulting scores. The Measurement ISIG has developed a measurement validity framework for common application across all areas of rehabilitation practice. This framework explicitly recognizes the relationship between the construct of interest and individual scores derived from the instrument when applied to specific clinical, research, or academic contexts. We describe development process and the current version of the framework and invite critical appraisal from the rehabilitation community. Discussion and critical appraisal of the prototype framework by symposium participants in discussion will contribute to framework revision.
