This symposium honors the work of Dr. Mark Ylvisaker, a pioneer in the field of TBI who emphasizes practical approaches in everyday activities with emphasis on collaboration. The goal of this symposium is to provide a forum for pediatric topic areas. Dr. Melissa McCart will discuss differences between medical and school interventions for children after brain injury and offer insights based on Mark's principles on how communities who work with children can collaborate when a student returns to school after a brain injury.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the steps medical and public-school systems can take to prepare to assist students when they return to school following injury, including knowing how to access a variety of programs/approaches available to schools to support students in the return to school process.
Recognize how to identify students who need school supports utilizing professional and family collaboration.
Describe the school’s service delivery/programming model for students with a brain injury and understand how to assess what specific needs a student might have and how to put the appropriate supports in place.
Identify strategies for collaboration between the medical and school communities to best support students in the return to school process.
