Music therapy (MT) and music-based interventions have been used in health care settings, including neurorehabilitation and ICU units, for a wide variety of treatment goals. We will first present a scoping review of MT and music-based interventions for treatment of spinal cord injury. The literature describes the use music interventions for the treatment of several clinical outcomes, including gait, respiratory function, mood, pain and self-concept. Next, we conducted a mixed-methods study to evaluate mood and pain outcomes acutely following an MT session and over time in inpatients participating in an MT program using qualitative methods. Then, a cross-sectional study evaluating perceptions of MT among patients and nurses in critical care will be presented. Finally, a Certified Music Therapist (MTA) will discuss opportunities for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists to co-treat with MTAs to achieve a number of patient goals, including improvements in gait, speech and respiratory function.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the current state of the literature for the use of music therapy (MT) and music-based interventions in patients with spinal cord injury for a variety of outcomes, including: a) gait; b) respiratory function; c) voice; d) anxiety/mood; e) quality of life; and f) pain.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe how an MT program may improve mood and pain outcomes, both acutely following a single MT session and over time in the neurorehabilitation setting.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe perceptions of an MT ICU program from the perspective of the patient and nurse. Further, participants will be able to identify benefits of this type of intervention from the patients’ perspective and suggested areas of improvement to inform implementation of ICU music programs at other centers.
Upon completion, participants will have an appreciation of the scope of MT co-treatments in terms of allied health care practitioners with whom music therapists are trained to work and the breath of clinical outcomes that can be targeted in these sessions. Limitations of our knowledge of co-treatment programs and limitations to implementation will be addressed.
