A. Personal Statement
Dr. Suarez-Balcazar received her PhD in Developmental and Child Psychology from the University of Kansas. Her area of concentration is Community Psychology. Her research expands across several interrelated areas that concentrate on developing, implementing, and evaluating culturally relevant community-based interventions to understand and address health disparities, in particular those experienced by Latinx immigrant families of children and youth with disabilities. She also studies the nexus between race, cultural relevance, disability, health literacy, and health disparities. She embraces a Community-Based Participatory Research approach and a Social Ecological model to address concerns facing communities of color and promote health programming. She has received federal and private foundation grants to support her work. Her program of research has resulted in 90 peer-reviewed publications, 7 co-authored books, 40 chapters, 37 other publications and 10 knowledge translation products. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, The Midwestern Psychological Association and the Society for Community Research and Action.
