A PERSONAL STATEMENT
My research interest focuses on educational and health disparities, critical race and disability theories, resiliency, empowerment, and related issues for racially and ethnically diverse children with disabilities and their families. Latinx and African American children with disabilities and their families face a host of educational and health disparities compared to their white counterparts. Through my current and future research endeavors, I seek to understand these disparities from the family’s perspective by taking a community-engaged and holistic approach. My research highlights the voice of marginalized groups that is often silenced and provides a sense of empowerment for them to share their strengths.

The broad objective of my research agenda is to contribute to research that fosters advocacy, empowerment, and resiliency in low-income, minority families of children with disabilities as they navigate systems of power. My research seeks to identify the strengths of low-income, ethnic-racial families and children with disabilities, provide resources to limit the barriers to navigating systems that cause educational and health disparities, and foster and build stronger connections between families and systems of power.
