Sherry A. Downie received her BA in Biology from Mercy College (1987), MS in Cell Biology and Anatomy (1992) and PhD in Cell Biology and Anatomy (1994) from New York Medical College. The focus of her doctoral work was characterizing differences between fore and hind limb mesenchyme relative to skeletal pattern formation. Her postdoctoral work was conducted at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1994-1996) and explored monocyte transmigration across the blood-brain barrier in HIV infection. Dr. Downie began teaching at Mercy College (1996-2004) for the graduate programs in Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physician Assistant (PA) and Acupuncture. She directed Gross Anatomy education for all four programs, as well as, Kinesiology and Pathology for PT and OT. In 2004, Dr. Downie joined the Department of Anatomy & Structural Biology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. There, she facilitated Medical Anatomy education, and became the Assistant Director (2006) then Director (2015) of the Clinical and Developmental Anatomy course. In 2008, Dr. Downie received a secondary appointment in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. During all of her years at Einstein, Dr. Downie conducted graduate anatomy courses for clinical specialties including Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, and Rheumatology, and she mentored medical students and residents in anatomy-based research projects. Dr. Downie represented Einstein in the state-wide AMSNY committee, and was active in multiple national and international professional organizations. She published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and was a reviewer and editor for top anatomy journals. Dr. Downie has been consultant, coordinator and faculty for Allergan since 2010 and, in that capacity, helped to develop print materials, educational videos, and live training programs pertaining to adult functional anatomy. In 2021, Dr. Downie retired from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine as Professor Emerita. However, she still conducts graduate medical education courses and consults in functional anatomy.
