Laetitia Yperzeele is a UEMS Board certified Neurologist working at the Stroke Unit and NeuroVascular Reference Center (NVCA) of the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) in Belgium. She is the coordinator of the hospitals’ Stroke Program and its regional Stroke Network since 2014, and is responsible for the organization of in-hospital stroke care and follow-up after discharge (rehabilitation and outpatient clinic).
She graduated from medical school at the University of Antwerp (UA) in 2008. After finishing her Neurology Residency at the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) and ZNA Hospitals Antwerp in 2013, she started a 1-year Neurovascular Fellowship at the University Hospital Brussels (UZ Brussel) focusing on acute stroke care, stroke unit management and neurosonology. In 2016 she obtained a PhD in Medical Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Her research focused on prehospital (in-ambulance) telemedicine in acute stroke and heart rate variability analysis. Since 2017 she is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Translational Neurosciences department of the University of Antwerp, and since 2019 she is Professor at the Faculty of Medicine.
Laetitia was the leading investigator in academic clinical trials on prehospital stroke care (FACT, AP-19 IATS), and has been Site Principal Investigator for national and international academic research projects (ELAN, Communicare, ..), registries (BEL-FMD, NOAC-ISP, SiFAP) and industry-led clinical trials (eg. THALES, NAVIGATE-ESUS, ETNA-AF, RESTORE BRAIN, ..). At present she is national coordinator of the AXIOMATIC-SSP trial. Her current research focuses on (predictors of) functional gait recovery and the effects of exoskeleton-assisted training after stroke.
She has been a member of the Scientific Board of the Belgian Stroke Council since 2016 and a fellow of the European Stroke Organization since 2019.
