I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
I am a bilingual therapist for communicative speech disorders. I have a special interest in incorporating music therapy into traditional speech therapy. My clinical areas of expertise include working with adults who have neurogenic disorders such as aphasias, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Additionally, I work with patients with voice disorders, and with those who want to pursue voice modification treatment. I use a combination of techniques from both speech therapy and music therapy to treat, assess, and design most appropriately targeted treatments for all of my patients.
I have a long-standing desire to understand the acoustic and neurological underpinnings of the medicinal benefits of music in speech therapy. My clinical vision is to develop new, evidence-based methodologies that would apply components of music training in the treatment of neurogenic speech disorders.
I am currently collaborating with Dr. Celia Stewart in her Find Your Voice Research Lab at NYU Steinhardt on a research thesis investigating musical properties that convey emotional information in speech. Additionally, I am also collaborating with Dr. Tamara Bushnik’s research lab at NYU Langone- Rusk Rehabilitation division to understand barriers and facilitators to living with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a chronic condition.
I received my first Master degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and Music Cognition from the City University of New York- Graduate Center. My thesis was an exploration of the relationship between music, language and the brain that was based on my conceptual album "Imperial Butterfly". I received my second Master's in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
Since I was a child, I was fascinated by sound and pursued the study of music; composition, vocal training and piano and have spent many years as a performing artist. It is my music that drew me closer to the field of speech pathology.
