I am interested in examining the neurobiological and neurophysiological effects of exercise through blood-based and trancranial magnetic stimulation-based measurements. Such measurements provide insight into the mechanisms that underlie the neuroplasticity-enhancing properties of exercise and support the development of exercise as an adjunct to stroke rehabilitation paradigms. Perhaps most exciting is that we may be able to combine exercise with other stroke rehabilitation interventions to enhance response to the intervention and foster a perpetual cycle of improved health and physical function. Ultimately, I seek to develop the science supporting exercise as an adjunctive modality to improve effectiveness of current stroke rehabilitation practices leading to reduced cost and improved health and quality of life for stroke survivors.
