Dana Otzel obtained her PhD in Biomechanics from the University of Florida. She is currently working as a Research Health Scientist for the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. She is currently funded with a five-year VA Career Development award that will provide the necessary training to obtain the preclinical expertise necessary to develop into an independent scientist with a translational bench-to-bedside research focus on improving neuromuscular function after spinal cord injury (SCI). This project will assess functional adaptations, anatomical changes and hormonal mechanisms of action in response to a promising combinatory therapy of testosterone plus locomotor training that produces walking recovery and muscular improvements following SCI. Her long-term research ambitions are to develop a translational interdisciplinary bench-to-bedside research program within the VA Healthcare System that focuses on improving neuromuscular function and preventing mobility disability that results from SCI in Veterans.
