Director of Ultrasound Education, Divison of Emergency Ultrasound
Massachusetts General Hospital
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
I am an attending physician in emergency medicine with specialty training in clinical research and emergency point-of-care ultrasound. While working full time clinically I have focused significant effort in teaching and training other health care providers of all levels, including medical students, advance practice providers, residents, as well as my attending-colleagues. My additional non-clinical work has focused on the dissemination of emergency ultrasound knowledge through both textbook/clinical manual writing, as well as through emergency ultrasound research.
My current teaching includes day to day training of emergency medicine residents during clinical shifts as well as during their ultrasound rotation where one on one instruction is provided. Additionally, I help with the instruction of our emergency ultrasound fellows who need exposure to more advanced ultrasound applications. I have been invited to teach and lecture in courses at the local, regional, and national level; to spread what I have learned during my fellowship training to others. My specialty within this field is ultrasound guided peripheral vascular access. I have been asked to teach this skill and others to other specialties including pediatric emergency medicine, medicine/pediatrics, trauma surgery, and critical care, as point-of-care ultrasound is not exclusive to just emergency medicine.
The goal of my post-residency work is to use the skills garnered during my research fellowship and MPH studies to provide a rigorous scientific evaluation of emergency ultrasound; my research interest is primarily in emergency ultrasound applications.
In summary, my clinical, educational, and research efforts are focused on contributing to the body of knowledge of emergency/point-of-care ultrasound – an essential tool that I feel strongly is essential to the advancement of all medical fields.
