Dr. Michelle Chen is a neuropsychologist, with a PhD in Clinical Psychology (with neuropsychology concentration and health emphasis) from Yeshiva University and postdoctoral training at Kessler Foundation. Her research involves the study of neurodegeneration and brain-behavior relationships in neurologic populations, such as older adults with cognitive impairment and persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). She has an interest in utilizing digital and sensor technology in the assessment and treatment of cognitive dysfunction. For example, one of her studies examines how smartphone keyboard dynamics (e.g., typing speed, typing errors) may reflect cognitive status among persons with MS. Another study uses smartphones to collect ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data that will elucidate real-time fluctuations in MS symptoms. She is currently starting a new investigation utilizing a digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) mobile application to improve sleep quality, as well as cognitive functioning, fatigue, and mood disturbances in the MS population. She hopes to continue using technology to enhance neuropsychological practice, such as analyzing speech samples of individuals with dementia and evaluating driving decline in older adults using in-vehicle sensors.
