Dr. Joyce M. Engel, PhD, OT, FAOTA is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). She received her Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy at UWM. Her master’s degree is in Human Development and Family Life from the University of Kansas (KU). Her Ph.D. is in Developmental and Child Psychology, also from KU where she did a component analysis of biofeedback-assisted relaxation in the treatment of pediatric headaches. Dr. Engel specializes in evaluations and interventions in pediatric pain especially in children with physical disabilities (e.g., cerebral palsy). Dr. Engel is analyzing a NIH-funded grant on examining the efficacy of relaxation training for providing pain relief and improving function in children with limb deficiency or cerebral palsy-related pain. The ultimate goal of her research is to decrease pain and suffering in the pediatric pain populations.
