Beth Barstow PhD, OTR/L, SCLV, FAOTA is an associate professor and program director for the graduate certificate in low vision rehabilitation located in the department of occupational therapy and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Beth has over 25 years of experience working with individuals with physical, sensory, cognitive, and mental health conditions. In her role at UAB, she teaches content to entry-level and post-professional in the evaluation and treatment of persons with vision loss and in teaching others. Her research interests center on improving participation and independence for those with vision loss and other disabilities, including fitness and health. She is particularly interested in how systems and environments influence a person’s ability to engage in valued activities here in the US and globally. She is a co-editor and author of the text, Occupational Therapy Interventions for Adults with Vision Loss and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in her areas of research interest. Beth has presented nationally and internationally. She has been grant funded by NIDILRR as a project member and principal investigator. She was a part of the committee which developed accessibility standards for fitness equipment through ASTM.
