My area of scholarship examines the intersection of movement science with behavioral and social sciences to minimize and prevent disability and promote health, wellness, and full participation in daily life activities. As a physical therapist and a behavioral scientist with a strong background in epidemiology and health service research, my work focuses on promoting adherence to evidence-based rehabilitation interventions. I was the principal investigator of the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Enhancing Active Living with Arthritis (ENACT) in which we conducted two clinical studies and one observational study utilizing behavioral science foundations to promote healthy behaviors. In addition, I developed the Home and Community Assessment, an assessment of mobility barriers and facilitators in the community impacting mobility and participation that has since been widely adopted and validated internationally. I have received funding from the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, the Arthritis Foundation, and National Institutes of Health.
