Stephenie Wallace is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She received a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and then received her MD from the Yale University School of Medicine. She completed residency training in Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center and completed fellowship training at UAB Adolescent Medicine. She has both certifications in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. During her fellowship training, she obtained a master’s degree in Public Health from UAB in Health Behaviors.
Dr. Wallace started her career focused on the treatment and care of children and adolescents with obesity since her fellowship. During her career, she was mentored by two leaders in pediatric nutrition, Drs. Frank Franklin, MD, Ph.D. and Bonnie Spear, Ph.D. She is also a faculty member with a secondary appointment in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at UAB School of Health Professions. Through this relationship, she has contributed to several research projects regarding insulin resistance and puberty development. Currently, SHINE clinic participates in the national POWER collaborative for pediatric obesity treatment with Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center. In 2008, she succeeded Dr. Franklin as the medical director for the SHINE (Support and Help In Nutrition and Exercise) clinic for pediatric obesity. Dr. Wallace’s leadership, the SHINE expanded to care for over 200 new patient encounters each year. In 2010, the clinic received a grant from the American Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Society for a weeklong summer camp to assist adolescents with weight loss.
