Mark Colapietro is a current graduate student and licensed athletic trainer within the Penn State University Kinesiology program with a focus in athletic training and sports medicine. He received his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Penn State University in 2015. He completed his master’s degree in 2016 at the University of Virginia with a focus in athletic training. While at the University of Virginia, he completed a thesis project analyzing running mechanics in individuals with chronic ankle instability which was presented at the International Ankle Symposium in the Netherlands in 2019. Since returning to Penn State in 2016 in pursuit of his doctoral degree, he served as the assistant athletic trainer with the Penn State men’s volleyball team. Completing a blood flow restriction (BFR) training course in the summer of 2018, he began to gain interest in tailoring his research into learning more about this technique within clinical practice. He has 3+ years of experience implementing BFR training within the sports medicine setting. Recently, he published a systematic review evaluating the effectiveness of BFR in individuals post ACL-reconstruction in improving muscle size and strength outcomes. With his dissertation work, Mark is focused on determining the clinical utility of BFR training with a focus on the effect of BFR training on hamstring muscle size, strength, and stiffness in healthy individuals.
