Dr. Reistetter is an occupational therapist recognized for research on rehabilitation outcomes and community engagement. He has published on geographic variation, community participation, rehabilitation outcomes, and functional status for individuals with disabilities receiving care in inpatient rehabilitation facilities, long-term care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies. His research funding includes both training and research grants awarded by the NIH and AHRQ on rehabilitation health services and outcomes research. Dr. Reistetter’s AHRQ R01 examined geographic variation in rehabilitation and developed Rehabilitation Service Areas (RSA) encompassing post-acute care (PAC) nationally. RSAs reflect empirical patterns of PAC service utilization based on data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which provides a tool for policy makers, researchers, administrators, and community members to better assess drivers of healthcare access, supply & demand to improve practice outcomes and policy. His research funding also includes patient-centered outcomes research for individuals with disabilities as well as implementation science research for community-dwelling older adults. These projects highlight the need to better understand the positive and negative influences of social determinants of health (SDH) on rehabilitation service and quality outcomes.
