Dr. Brayden Kameg currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the Department of Health and Community Systems, where she has the opportunity to blend her passion for teaching, clinical practice, scholarship, and service. She teaches across the undergraduate and graduate programs, where her teaching responsibilities include mental health nursing, advanced practice psychiatric nursing, psychotherapy for advanced practice psychiatric nurses, and psychiatric management for primary care providers. She is also involved in various health educational training programs, most recently and currently serving as faculty expert on a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-funded program that is integrating substance use training, and specific content on buprenorphine prescribing, across advanced practice registered nursing curricula (Provider Clinical Support Systems [PCSS]-Pitt).
Dr. Kameg maintains clinical practice at Psychotherapy Associates, where she treats patients across the lifespan, and the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS), where she works on an inpatient basis. At VAPHS, she is the chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the behavioral health (extended care) department, and has implemented various quality improvement programs such as the implementation of multi-sensory interventions for psychiatric patients as an alternative to psychotropic medication, renewing and updating department-wide admission guidelines, and the development of prescribing standards for psychotropic medications.
Dr. Kameg has published and presented on topics pertaining to substance use, gender-related issues, and veteran-specific issues both nationally and internationally. In 2019, she received funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in collaboration with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to develop online training materials to aid advanced practice nurses in the management of substance use disorders. She has received additional grants from the Foundation for Addictions Nursing, the Greater Pittsburgh Nursing Research Council, and the Office for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice at the Veterans Health Administration. Additionally, Dr. Kameg received recognition for her focus on scholarship in receiving the Shirley Negley Kobert Award from the Nurse Practitioner Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
She is active in various professional organizations, some of which include the American Psychiatric Nurses Association where she serves on the Scholarly Review Committee and Awards Committee; the International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA) where she serves on the Awards Committee in addition to serving as the editorial manager for the organization’s journal, the Journal of Addictions Nursing; and the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, where she serves on the Membership Committee.
Dr. Kameg earned her BSN from the University of Pittsburgh in 2016, in addition to her DNP (area of concentration: psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, with a minor focus in nursing education) in 2019. She is thrilled to continue her relationship with the School of Nursing in a faculty role.
