MEG Scientist
Wake Forest School of Medicine, United States
I am an MEG scientist in Neurology and an Assistant Research Professor in Neurobiology and Anatomy with a background in systems and computational neuroscience. I also have extensive experience in multiunit electrophysiology, animal behavior, signal processing, and statistical analyses with an emphasis on Bayesian modeling. Magnetoencephalography is an extension of my previous electrophysiology work because it measures the instantaneous biomagnetic correlates of neural processing across the entire brain. My clinical work is focused on the mapping of seizure generators in patients with epilepsy as well as mapping the brain regions involved in essential functions such as somatosensory, motor, and language processing. These maps are then integrated into subsequent surgical planning and patient management decisions. I also train residents and fellows in clinical MEG applications and offer regular CME seminar series on clinical MEG for regional epileptologists. In addition to my clinical MEG work for WFUSM, I am interested in how networks of brain regions work together to process information and how such processing is interrupted in pathological conditions such as epilepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder, mild and severe traumatic brain injury, and by drugs of abuse such as alcohol or opiates in both humans and nonhuman primates. Our team has also pioneered a nonhuman primate optogenetics platform to optically stimulate various transduced brain regions while simultaneously recording MEG and local field potentials, with the goal of elucidating how various types of stimulation propagate through brain networks in healthy and diseased states such as epilepsy or substance abuse disorders. The cognitive and precognitive tasks that I and our team have developed can also be used to probe network function in epilepsy, PTSD, TBI, and substance abuse, and in particular we employ our resting state and sensory gating paradigms as translational assays of function in populations as diverse as Veterans with PTSD and/or TBI, patients with severe TBI, normal adult drinkers,
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
