Sylvia Lucas MD, PhD, FAHS is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Neurology at the University of Washington. She is a retired faculty member of the Departments of Neurology, Neurological Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine; and recipient of the Wadsworth Clinical Term Professorship in Headache Research and Practice.
She graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in Pharmacy, a PhD in Physiology & Biophysics, and an MD from the School of Medicine. Dr. Lucas did post-doctoral work in neurophysiology at the University of Washington and neurology training at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She was Chief Resident in Neurology at The New York Hospital.
She is the Founder of the University of Washington Headache Clinic. Her clinical interests are in treatment of primary and secondary headache disorders and women’s special issues in headache management. Research interests are in traumatic brain injury and treatment of post-traumatic headache.
She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Washington State Neurological Society, the American Headache Society, the International Headache Society, and Headache Co-operative of the Pacific
She has published in journals such as Nature, Journal of Neurophysiology, Headache, Current Pain and Headache Reports, Cephalalgia, Journal of Neurotrauma and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and “Clinical Updates in Women’s Health Care: Migraine and Other Headache Disorders” for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She actively participates in National Institutes of Health, Congressional Directed Medical Research Program, and Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center grant reviews on traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic headache.
She was the recipient of the Harold Lamport Biomedical Research Prize and is a Fellow of the American Headache Society.
