Julie Knitter, O.T.R. is the Director of Occupational Therapy and Assistive Technology departments at Blythedale Children’s Hospital, one of only 14 specialty children's hospitals in the country and the only one of its kind in New York State. She has over 35 years of experience at the Hospital and supervises a staff of more than 25 occupational therapists, the largest cadre of hospital-based pediatric therapists in NY. She is proficient treating children ranging from medically fragile infants to teenagers recovering from traumatic injuries. She has an extensive background in pediatric rehabilitation with particular areas of interest including hemiplegia, brain injury, hand function, research, and assistive technology.
Under her leadership, the Occupational Therapy Department continues to advance knowledge and practice in pediatric rehabilitation. She has overseen the development of an innovative upper extremity intensive program for children with hemiplegia. Upper extremity program components and outcomes were presented at AACPDM in 2015, 2018 and AOTA 2019. Under her direction, the Hospital developed a nationally recognized Assistive Technology Center which includes core team of specialists from OT, PT, ST and rehabilitation engineering. The assistive technology team provides services to more than 300 children per year and was recently featured on the PBS series, The Visionaries.
Julie is passionate about supporting patients, and families through the often challenging process to acquire the assistive technology to achieve the highest possible level of participation and independence.
