Elissa Larkin, M.S., CCC-SLP, holds clinical certification as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Elissa earned her Master of Science in Communication Disorders with bilingual certification (Spanish) from Arizona State University, and has practiced as an SLP for 14 years, 12 of those at Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago/Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRALab). Elissa worked primarily in inpatient neurorehabilitation before joining the Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment as a Research SLP in 2015. She completed advanced training in the Northwestern Clinical Bioethics Scholars Program through the Northwestern Medicine Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities and joined the Donnelley Bioethics Program as a Bioethicist in 2021. Elissa is also an inaugural member of the Kabiller Humanitarian Society at SRALab. Elissa has expertise in working with patients and families living with neurologically based speech, language, cognitive/communication and swallowing impairments, and aphasia research and treatment; provides on-going education to SRALab Allied Health and nursing staff in principles and strategies for supporting patient communication; and combines her bioethics and supportive communication expertise when engaging in clinical and research ethics services. Elissa’s areas of clinical and scholarly interest include applications of ethical frameworks in rehabilitation practice, Life Participation Approach to Aphasia-centered research and treatment, and exploring and implementing interprofessional education models to increase communication access for all patients.
