Robert G. Kowalski, MD, MS, is a research physician and faculty member in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology, University of Colorado School of Medicine. His research interests are acute and critical care Neurological conditions including traumatic brain injury, stroke, status epilepticus, and coma. He is Deputy Managing Editor of Annals of Neurology. He has more than 20 years of experience in clinical research in acute care Neurology, as well as experience treating stroke patients. He is principal investigator on a study of a novel mobile stroke program at the University of Colorado Hospital -- one of the first three such programs in the U.S., and one of the first five in the world. He is Editor of a Topic Section on blood-based biomarkers of stroke and serves on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Neurology. He completed a study of recovery of consciousness and functional ability in patients with disorders of consciousness following TBI (JAMA Neurology 2021). He led a research collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems program (TBIMS) , investigating the incidence of acute ischemic stroke following TBI, and its role in outcome for TBI survivors (Stroke 2017). He was principal investigator on a two-year project funded by the Colorado Brain Injury Trust Fund to evaluate the impact of stroke and other concurrent medical conditions and treatment complications in outcome following TBI. Dr. Kowalski completed his medical education at the National University of Ireland, University College Cork School of Medicine. He trained in Neurology at the Yale University School of Medicine. He conducted research in the Neurological Intensive Care Units at the Columbia University Medical Center, in New York, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. This research produced findings on misdiagnosis in subarachnoid hemorrhage (JAMA 2004), the neuroanatomic basis of awakening in acute coma (Annals of Neurology, 2015) and the role of cocaine use in provoking seizures in subarachnoid hemorrhage (Journal of Neurosurgery, 2016). As Director of the Neurology Research Department at the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI., Dr. Kowalski participated in a multicenter study of fibrinolysis for central retinal artery occlusion (Stroke, 2020).
