Personal Statement
His clinical and research focus is on neurorehabilitation, in particular multiple sclerosis, gait analysis, orthotics of the lower limb and spasticity treatment. Conducted research comprises epidemiological and translational (biomechanical and biomarker) studies. He has experience with systematic literature reviews, cohort studies and randomized clinical trials, and with longitudinal data, prognostic and clinimetric analyses techniques. Cooperation with PhD-students, co-investigators and other (international) centres has always been successfully accomplished for each project.
Positions and Honors
In 2004 he started working as a rehabilitation physician at VU University Medical Center Amsterdam. In 2007 he successfully defended his PhD thesis ‘Outcome measurement and functional prognosis in early multiple sclerosis’. Since September 2014, he has been professor of rehabilitation medicine and chair of the department of rehabilitation medicine at VU University Medical Center Amsterdam. He is also chair of the committee of the Netherlands Society of Rehabilitation Medicine that is responsible for the Dutch rehabilitation residency programme (Concilium) and immediate past president of the executive board of RIMS (Rehabilitation In Multiple Sclerosis).
Contributions to Science
He has published around 100 scientific peer-reviewed international publications, supervised 6 PhD-students and is currently supervising 11 PhD-students.
