Associate Professor
UCL
London, United Kingdom
My name is Dr Carolyn Bruce, I am a qualified speech and language therapist, and I have worked in Higher Education since 1986, with research and teaching roles at The National Hospitals College of Speech Sciences, Birkbeck College and University College London. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, and a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
I qualified as a speech and language therapist in 1978, and since then, I have worked in both hospital and community settings providing rehabilitation for children and adults with communication difficulties. In the last thirty years, I have focussed on working with adults with neurological conditions. I joined the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences in 1992, where in addition to my work as a lecturer and researcher, I am Director of the UCL Communication Clinic.
My research interest can broadly be described as the rehabilitation of acquired communication difficulties. My early research focused on spoken word production, and I completed my PhD exploring the effects of a cueing aid on word retrieval in aphasia in 1996. My post-doctoral research has investigated numerous aspects of aphasia with a strong emphasis on how technology can be used to support spoken and written communication.
I am currently working on several projects with a group of researchers at UCL and beyond, including Caroline Newton, Chris Donlan, Vanessa Meitanis, Yael Benn, Ann Parker, and Eliada Pampoulou. I am particularly interested in how we can support people with numeracy difficulties, at the foundation number level and with higher level computational skills in daily life.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
