This exploratory and descriptive qualitative study explored the meaning of participating in grocery shopping with 14 adults with moderate to severe brain injury. All participants had participated in rehabilitation targeted towards grocery shopping to participate in semi-structured interviews. Data were deductively analysed using a thematic approach coding, to identify categories from the American Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.

Five key themes emerged from the data: ‘Getting to the Shops’, ‘Generation and use of a List’, ‘Searching and Locating Items’, ‘Selecting Items’ and ‘Budgeting and Paying for Items’. Cognitive and visual brain injury-related impairments and external factors impact grocery shopping performance following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Clinical practice should include consideration of the multiple demands and environmental context to inform targeted rehabilitation interventions.

Upon completion, participants will be able to describe what brain injury impairments (ie. cognitive, visual, motor) can lead to grocery shopping dependence after moderate to severe traumatic brain injury
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe changes that occur within grocery shopping performance as a result of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury
Upon completion participants will be able to describe how adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury complete grocery shopping, including person and environmental factors that influence performance
