Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) provides life saving cardio and/or pulmonary support, and provides the body time to recover or to work toward additional advanced medical care. Engagement in functional activity and mobility through occupational and physical therapy provides this patient population with physical, functional, and cognitive progress, allowing for improved outcomes. Attendees will learn the foundations of ECMO, inlcuding basic function and limitations, and will be able to describe the role of occupational and physical therapy with the ECMO population. In addition, attendees will gain an understanding of how to initiate rehabilitation on an ECMO unit, and engage with the interdisciplinary team regarding functional therapy with ECMO patients.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the role of occupational and physical therapy working with patients supported by ECMO.
Upon completion, participants will be able to define the foundational knowledge of ECMO and other advanced cardiac diagnoses.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe a framework for developing a rehab specific competency for working with patients supported by ECMO.
Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to initiate therapy engagement with patients supported by ECMO.
