Increasing capacity in implementation science offers an opportunity to fast-track evidence-based practices within rehabilitation. A key knowledge gap is mapping strategies to relevant challenges in the uptake of evidence-based care or policy. The focus of this instructional course is to build capacity and illustrate an approach to identifying challenges and opportunities for implementing evidence-based practices that can be used in IS research proposal development. This interactive symposium will blend didactic and practical group-based activities to give audience members a practical context to develop skills in integrating implementation science into rehabilitation. The panel will review an example from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research TBI Model System Collaborative Project to apply methodology to characterize and identify factors that impact access to treatment for persons with TBI and chronic pain, to inform a data-driven approach to mapping implementation strategies, and subsequent translational efforts.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the logic for selecting implementation science interventions in preparatory grant submissions.
Describe/define the role in using qualitative data to identify facilitators, barriers, and contextual factors that influence access to care.
Describe providers’ perceived facilitators and barriers to providing treatment to persons with TBI and chronic pain.
Apply theoretical constructs and general method for mapping implementation strategies to create change in rehabilitation settings.
Identify opportunities for integrating implementation strategy mapping into implementation plans to optimize readiness for future translational efforts.
