Assessment From Afar: Exploring the Evidence of Neurorehabilitation Virtual Assessment Tools

Application of telehealth within rehabilitation has significantly increased over the last decade. Via telephone, messaging, e-mail, and video conferencing, providers can monitor functional status, measure therapy progress, and perform research protocols. Still, telerehabilitation is not without challenges. In this symposium, we will focus on the use of telerehabilitation as a platform for neurorehabilitation assessment. We will begin with a general overview of the state of telerehabilitation science. Next, we will delve into two specific examples of remote neurorehabilitation synchronous assessment based on the presenters’ research. Examples from two large, multi-site clinical trials will describe remote applications utilized for the administration of the Wolf Motor Function Test and the Fugl-Meyer Assessment. In our second example, we will provide an overview of remote gait assessment for neurorehabilitation populations. Through interactive discussion, we will cover topics such as equipment needs, assessment reliability, patient considerations, and tips and tools for the remote clinician.
