Our symposium will include a description of our comprehensive interdisciplinary evidence-based hospital protocol to address agitation in patient admitted with TBI, which optimizes safety, promotes education, and utilizes multimodal interventions with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes. We will present data collected before and after implementation of this protocol to determine if our interventions led to improvements in their care. Our goals include minimizing hospital-sustained injuries to patients and staff, the use of restraints, medications that may increase brain recovery time and LOS, and overall LOS in the ICU and hospital, as well as facilitating increased participation in Acute Therapies and optimizing adherence to other medical treatments.

Learning Objectives:

Evaluate the impact of agitation in patients admitted with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Recognize the benefits of early identification of TBI and agitation.
Identify evidence based non-pharmacologic strategies to minimize agitation in patients with TBI.
Construct an evidence based pharmacologic treatment algorithm to address agitation in patients with TBI.
